Brad Pitt has pulled ahead in his legal skirmish with Angelina Jolie over their sprawling French winery, Chateau Miraval. A state appeals court has given Pitt the green light to sue Yuri Shefler, a Russian billionaire who snagged a 50% stake in the estate from Jolie amidst their turbulent divorce.
Back in 2008, Jolie and Pitt bought the 1,200-acre winery nestled in the romantic South of France, where they also tied the knot. Initially, Jolie planned to sell her share to Pitt, but talks crumbled when Pitt insisted on a nondisclosure agreement, silencing her from airing allegations of abuse during their split. These allegations include a scuffle in 2016 aboard a private jet, where Jolie accused Pitt of aggressive behavior.
“Jolie continues to rehash, revise and reimagine her description of an event that happened 6 years ago by adding completely untrue information each time she fails to get what she wants,” Pitt’s representative noted.
Jolie, instead, sealed a $64 million deal with Shefler, but Pitt wasn't having it. He filed a lawsuit in 2022, asserting that she violated their unwritten pact to not sell their stakes without mutual consent. The court found that Shefler played a significant role in the transaction, as evidenced by his active involvement and financial guarantees, contradicting previous rulings that tagged him as a passive investor.
The appeals court highlighted Shefler's crucial involvement, pointing to several letters he sent to Jolie, including one assuring her of a deal "despite personal complications." The court's decision peels back layers of the couple's past, exposing not just their business disagreement but also the raw aftermath of their divorce. Pitt has consistently denied Jolie's allegations, and his latest court win marks another twist in this high-profile saga.
