From Childhood Trauma to Redemption

Adam Shankman, the visionary mind behind Hairspray and the newly released Stop! That! Train!, has opened up about a turbulent past that almost derailed his now-thriving Hollywood career. In an emotionally charged essay for GLAAD's “GLAAD To Share” series, Shankman delves into the harrowing experiences of his early life, including a stint in conversion therapy at the tender age of four. His crime? Being an energetic child who dared to love dance.

"Being queer was not an okay thing to be by any metric during my formative years," Shankman confided. He recounts how a doctor attempted to change his behavior under the guise of therapy, instilling fear with dire warnings: "If you say you want to be a girl or if you demonstrate that, your parents will discard you. You’ll starve. You’ll die. You’ll never have any friends. No one will ever love you."

Fortunately for Shankman, his mother put an end to these sessions after he revealed the truth. Yet, the scars lingered, manifesting in a battle with addiction by his teenage years—a coping mechanism for the isolation and fear he felt.

Finding His Voice Through Dance and Storytelling

The world nearly missed out on Adam Shankman's artistic genius. He found solace and community within the world of dance, which became his lifeline and entry into a series of creative vocations: from dancer to choreographer, director, and producer. An ironic twist of fate, the deaths of choreographers Lester Wilson and Michael Peters, paved the way for his ascent in Hollywood.

"At this point in my life, I’m just a storyteller. That’s what I feel most grateful for," Shankman mused, reflecting on his multifaceted career.

His directorial journey began unexpectedly with The Wedding Planner, proving that sometimes fate has grand plans. Today, he's celebrated as one of Hollywood's most innovative queer directors, continuing to challenge norms and prejudice through film.

Embracing Queer Cinema

Shankman's latest film, Stop! That! Train!, marks a significant milestone as his first overtly queer feature, starring none other than drag icon RuPaul. While his previous works like Hairspray and Bringing Down the House subtly embodied his queer sensibilities, this project fully embraces them.

"This is my first kinda queer movie," Shankman shared, adding, "I don’t believe in making things that exclude; that would be weird to me, because I know what it feels like to be excluded." His journey from surviving a silenced childhood to becoming a beacon of queer storytelling exemplifies resilience and creativity.

As Shankman looks to the future, he remains committed to his craft—determined to create, inspire, and share stories that resonate universally, regardless of labels or boundaries.
