Sally Field – an acting powerhouse with a career spanning decades – is back in the limelight with her new Netflix film "Remarkably Bright Creatures." In this unique role, she plays Tova, a night cleaner at an aquarium, finding solace and companionship in a giant Pacific octopus named Marcellus, voiced by Alfred Molina. The film, streaming globally on May 8, explores deep themes of grief and companionship, making it both poignant and relatable.
Reflecting on her role, Field dives into the emotional challenges that come with portraying a character like Tova, especially at this stage in her life. "I do know that human beings have a profound connection with creatures of all forms," she shares. "They have helped us live our lives. We have to appreciate them, especially ocean creatures. We may lose them if we don't pay attention."
Turning 80 this November, Field is candid about the trials and triumphs of aging in the entertainment industry. "It's always been hard," Field admits. "I'm female, and I'm an older female, so it's always very hard to find characters that are worth leaving a piece of your soul behind." Yet, she remains optimistic, finding joy and enrichment through the characters she plays.
Despite the challenges, Field celebrates her career milestones and continues to seek roles that resonate with her. Her remarkable journey includes working alongside legendary actors such as Burt Reynolds, Tom Hanks, and Julia Roberts, adding an octopus to that list with her latest venture.
Field’s life off-screen is a blend of introspection and quiet resilience. Although she considers herself a hermit, she finds ways to connect with her fans across generations. Whether reminiscing about "Gidget" or "Smokey and the Bandit," Field acknowledges the diversity of her audience.
As she approaches her milestone birthday, Field humorously dismisses grand plans like climbing Mount Everest, focusing instead on living each day fully. "I thought maybe I'd climb Mount Everest. Maybe it’s a good time to do that," she jokes. "By the middle of next week, I'll start to have a plan."
Sally Field remains a beloved figure, her career marked by versatility and an enduring presence that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
