Tina Knowles’ culinary venture, Mama Tina's Gumbo, found itself in a spicy situation at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo recently. The Houston Health Department confirmed to USA TODAY that the popular stand was temporarily shut down due to a 'complaint investigation.' Owned by the mother of global superstars Beyoncé and Solange, the stand serves up a beloved version of Southern cuisine.
Dr. Theresa Tran, Director of the Houston Health Department, clarified that the closure on March 16 was due to "clerical issues." However, she assured that the stand was "cooperative with the department’s recommendations" and successfully passed an inspection, leading to its reopening on March 17. Local station KPRC reported service had resumed by March 18.
“Everybody's been wanting to try my gumbo," Knowles shared. "I've been making gumbo for 40-something years.”
For fans of the Knowles family, Mama Tina's pop-up is a culinary delight, offering a chance to savor the gumbo that Beyoncé adores. Available in two mouthwatering options, the $25 seafood combo and the $23 chicken-and-sausage dish, the stand has been a hit with patrons.
Scheduled to operate until March 22, the gumbo stand is nestled within the world’s largest stock exhibition and rodeo, drawing over 2.7 million attendees last year. It's more than just food – it’s a slice of Southern culture that has now bounced back from its temporary setback, ready to serve the masses once more.
