The Birth of a Hollywood Tradition

Lights, camera, action! Flashback to May 16, 1929, when the dazzling world of the Oscars was born at the glamorous Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. In a city known for its star-studded events, this one was different. The very first Academy Awards ceremony was an intimate affair, held without the fanfare of television or radio. Imagine a cozy gathering lasting a mere 15 minutes, where 12 golden statuettes were handed out, and entry only set you back $5. As Juan Pineda, The Roosevelt's Director of Entertainment, vividly describes, “It was the shortest Oscar ceremony. It was 15 minutes long. That's all.”

Stars and Stories by the Tropicana Pool

That night, the silent film "Wings" soared above the rest, capturing the prestigious Best Picture award, while the legendary Charlie Chaplin received special recognition. But that's not all. The Hollywood Roosevelt was not just a stage for cinematic achievements but also a cradle for star-making moments. Marilyn Monroe, who arrived as Norma Jean, had her first photo shoot at the Tropicana pool. Pineda reminisces, “This is where she becomes Marilyn Monroe. She takes her very first photo shoot at the Tropicana pool on this diving board.”

A Hotel Steeped in Hollywood Lore

The Hollywood Roosevelt has drawn many luminaries through its doors. From Clark Gable and Carole Lombard, whose names grace a penthouse, to musical genius Prince, this hotel is a living piece of Hollywood history. It's also where Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper filmed scenes for "A Star is Born." As Pineda notes, “Prince lived in there. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper shot 'A Star is Born' in that very room as well.” The Hollywood Roosevelt stands proudly on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, inviting guests to step out and feel like stars themselves.
