Hollywood's New Political Darling

It looks like Eric Swalwell is Hollywood's latest obsession! The Democratic congressman from the East Bay is raking in some serious cash as he sets his sights on the California governor's mansion. With more than $100,000 in donations from entertainment industry heavyweights, Swalwell is leading the pack among candidates vying to replace term-limited Governor Gavin Newsom this year. According to The California Post, a deep dive into the campaign records reveals Swalwell's star-studded lineup of supporters.

Swalwell's A-List Supporters

Swalwell's campaign is shaking things up with some major Hollywood backing. Among those opening their wallets are actor Sean Penn, who generously donated $15,000, and legendary actor Robert De Niro, who chipped in $10,000. "One Battle After Another" star Sean Penn and "Two and a Half Men" actor Jon Cryer are also throwing their support behind Swalwell, each contributing $10,000.

“Hollywood's movers and shakers have plenty of reasons to shell out for the Golden State's next governor," said Larry Gerston, professor emeritus of political science at San Jose State University.

Hobnobbing with the Stars

Swalwell's Hollywood connections don't stop at financial contributions. The congressman found himself in hot water for missing House floor votes last year, reportedly to attend the premiere of HBO’s "White Lotus" in Los Angeles. Notably, the show's producer, David Bernad, along with other big-name producers from shows like "The Night Agent" and "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills," have collectively donated a whopping $20,000 to Swalwell's campaign.

Competition Heats Up

But Swalwell isn't the only candidate courting Tinseltown's royalty. Former Rep. Katie Porter is running a close second, receiving significant attention from Hollywood icons like Jane Fonda and actress Rene Russo. Meanwhile, former Rep. Xavier Becerra has already banked contributions from revered figures like Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg.

With the stakes incredibly high, Hollywood is keen on getting its voice heard in the upcoming gubernatorial race. As the June primary election looms, expect the glitterati to up their game in a bid to sway the vote. But whether these endorsements translate into electoral success remains to be seen.

Big Spenders and Political Gambles

Beyond the Democrats, the Republican frontrunners like Steve Hilton are struggling to tap into Hollywood's elite, turning instead to other sources, like a $39,200 contribution from crypto billionaire Chris Larsen. Meanwhile, hedge fund tycoon Tom Steyer is splashing out $28 million on his own campaign, underscoring the vast sums being thrown into the race.

As campaign filings roll in, experts predict more stars will jump on board, but as Larry Gerston points out, "Endorsements rarely make a difference, even from Hollywood types." Still, the buzz around Swalwell and his Hollywood backers is undeniable, and as the clock ticks closer to the primary, all eyes are on California's glittering gubernatorial showdown.
