The Great British Film Dream

Seaford, a quaint seaside town in Sussex, once tantalized with the dream of becoming the British Hollywood. Flashback to the early 20th century – the 1910s and 1920s to be exact – when serious plans were laid to make Seaford the heart of the British film industry. The idea was simple: mimic the success of Hollywood by leveraging Seaford’s natural allure, much like Los Angeles.

Blessed with reliable sunshine, diverse scenery, and convenient rail links to London, Seaford had the ingredients for a cinematic empire. It was even home to the Pioneer Film Company, using the dramatic Sussex landscapes for early film scenes. "You have the picturesque landscape of the South Downs and Seven Sisters white chalk cliffs, as well as loads of fantastic beaches and historic towns...it's what makes Sussex such a fantastic place to film!" said Kelly Mikulla of the Sussex Film Office.

From Dream to Reality – and Back

Despite the grand vision, Seaford's Hollywood didn't quite materialize. The focus shifted to areas closer to London, like Elstree, which offered the allure of proximity to the capital. California’s sunny reputation was hard to compete with, and the outbreak of the First World War further stymied investment in the area.

However, Seaford's cinematic journey didn’t end there. It has since become a cherished location for filmmakers, offering stunning backdrops for major productions. The Seven Sisters cliffs, just a stone's throw from Seaford, made it into Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in 2005, and nearby Cuckmere Haven starred in the Oscar-winning Atonement.

Seaford’s Cinematic Landscape

Seaford’s natural beauty has continued to lure filmmakers. The flying car scene from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968) was shot along the Seven Sisters coastline, and parts of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, the 2001 epic Pearl Harbor, and the upcoming film Wicked have all used this stunning backdrop.

More recently, Hope Gap, featuring Annette Bening and Bill Nighy, was shot in the area and released in 2020. The Seaford, Seven Sisters, and Cuckmere Haven triangle remains a top choice for filmmakers due to its dramatic chalk cliffs, unspoiled coastline, and easy access to both Brighton and London. Seaford's Hollywood dream may have dimmed, but its cinematic legacy shines on.
