Batten down the hatches because Scream 7 is slashing its way to the box office summit, and it's a bloodbath for the competition. This weekend, the latest installment of the iconic horror series claimed the number one spot with ease, leaving other films in its gory wake. According to Variety, the Ghostface sequel pulled in a staggering $28.8 million just on Friday from 3,540 theaters across North America.
This impressive haul knocked Wuthering Heights from its perch at number one, as Paramount and Spyglass are now eyeing a jaw-dropping $60 million opening weekend. Should this come to fruition, it will mark Scream 7 as the strongest debut in the franchise's history. Not too shabby for a film that faced the brink of collapse before shooting even began.
Getting Scream 7 to the big screen was nothing short of a horror story in itself. Cast changes nearly derailed the project, with Christopher Landon stepping away and original writer Kevin Williamson stepping in. The biggest question on everyone's lips was whether Neve Campbell would reprise her role as Sidney Prescott after her absence in Scream 6.
“The studio knew they needed a big draw, so they reportedly cut a $7 million check for her return,” commented an industry insider.
Campbell wasn’t the only familiar face to return; Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Matthew Lillard also came back, rounding out a star-studded cast that included Isabel May, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Anna Camp, Joel McHale, and Mckenna Grace. It's a killer ensemble for a slasher sequel that overcame major behind-the-scenes hurdles.
Trailing behind Scream 7's dominance, Sony's animated sports comedy GOAT eked out a solid performance, coming in at number two. It scored $2.6 million on Friday alone, with a weekend total expected to reach around $11.7 million. Not bad, but certainly no match for Ghostface's machete.
Meanwhile, Twenty One Pilots: More Than We Ever Imagined carved out a niche at number four, pulling in $2.1 million from a more limited release across 770 locations. This concert film is projected to conclude the weekend with approximately $3.5 million.
Closing the top five, Crime 101, Amazon MGM’s thriller, pulled in just over $920,000 on Friday. Forecasts suggest a weekend haul of about $3.34 million, with a domestic total inching towards $29.9 million.
It’s clear that Scream 7 is the weekend's reigning champion, and none of this week’s releases can come close to dethroning it. Get ready for more screams as final numbers roll in tomorrow!
