Sam Raimi and Rachel McAdams: A Promising Collaboration

Sam Raimi isn't shy about his admiration for Rachel McAdams. In a recent chat with Total Film, he expressed his regret over what he calls the "underutilization" of McAdams in the 2022 Marvel sensation, 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.' The director clearly sees untapped potential in the Hollywood starlet, leading him to promise himself a future project with her.

Raimi's vow has come to fruition with 'Send Help,' a survival thriller where McAdams stars alongside Dylan O'Brien. The director gushed over McAdams, highlighting her brilliance and how her warmth adds a unique charm to any project she's a part of.

“First, she was the perfect person because she’s such a brilliant actress,” Raimi said, reflecting on their collaboration.

From Romantic Lead to Dark Villain

In 'Doctor Strange,' McAdams played the role of Dr. Christine Palmer, a character deeply intertwined with Stephen Strange, portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch. Despite her stellar performances, Raimi felt there was more to explore.

Taking a bold leap, McAdams transitions from her usual romantic and dramatic roles to play a "dark, terrible villain" in 'Send Help.' Raimi believes this role challenges both McAdams and viewers, allowing her to showcase a side of her talent the audience hasn't seen before.

The Critics Weigh In

The Hollywood Reporter praised McAdams' performance in 'Send Help,' with critic Frank Scheck noting her transformation in the film as both "convincing and enormous fun." The role stretches McAdams in ways she's never experienced, proving her versatility and depth as an actress.

At the film’s Los Angeles premiere, Raimi couldn’t contain his excitement for McAdams' performance. He remarked that McAdams was an inspired choice for the role due to her fresh take on dark characters and her knack for comedy.

“There’s a very tough woman there who usually just shows off her beauty, her great skills as an actress, her feminine side, but not the monster within,” Raimi noted. "Fortunately, all actors and actresses have monsters within them to bring out; I know from personal experience.”
