Paul Rudd, the adored 'This Is 40' star, recently took fans on a trip down memory lane, sharing his run-ins with the law during his teenage years on Benny Blanco and Lil Dicky's podcast 'Friends Keep Secrets'. The Hollywood heartthrob wasn't always the picture-perfect citizen we know today. His teenage years had their share of shenanigans that earned him the attention of local law enforcement.
In one such tale, Rudd recounts an intense encounter with police during a playful water gun fight with friends. Rudd remembers, “Two times, when I was a teenager. One time I was in a car, I was riding shotgun, my friend Mike was driving, and we had water guns and there was a car next to us, our friends.” What started as innocent fun quickly escalated when law enforcement mistook the water guns for something more sinister.
“This cop was a super psycho. He has a gun trained on us. And he comes walking around the side, and he says, ‘Alright, boy. Slowly, real slowly, hand over that water gun. And you better pray it’s a water gun,’” Rudd recounted, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
The actor shared that the police didn't let them off easy, issuing tickets for reckless driving and accomplice to reckless driving after their car swerved into another lane. Rudd had to face the legal consequences in court, perhaps a lesson learned the hard way.
But the misadventures didn't end there. During his college days, Rudd faced yet another legal hurdle. Freshman year antics led him to an underage drinking incident outside a bar in Lawrence, Kansas. Reflecting on his youthful indiscretion, the actor admitted to the officers that the drink was his, though he tried to downplay his involvement.
These youthful indiscretions didn't derail Rudd's path to stardom. He eventually landed community service with the Boys and Girls Club, a fitting twist that perhaps helped shape the grounded, affable persona he carries today.
Looking back, Rudd's encounters with the law seem almost as comedic as his movie roles. His stories remind us that even the biggest stars have humble, and sometimes hilarious, beginnings.
