Oliver Hudson's Hollywood Parenting Strategy

Actor Oliver Hudson is taking a page straight out of his legendary mom Goldie Hawn’s playbook by keeping his kids away from the Hollywood spotlight – at least for now. Reflecting on his own upbringing alongside his sister, Kate Hudson, Oliver told HELLO! that he’s choosing a similar path with his children. His mom famously advised Kate, "You’re not going to do anything but plays until you’re 18-years-old, then you can go off and do your stuff.” Oliver is following those wise footsteps as he navigates parenthood.

Oliver, doting dad to Wilder (18), Bodhi (15), and Rio (12), says all three have shown an interest in acting. However, he wants to shield them just a bit longer. "I’m saying, ‘Go be in plays, be an amazing dancer on the dance team, be you, and we’ll figure all of that stuff out when you’re a bit older,’” he explained. The tolls and triumphs of child stardom loom large, and Oliver’s protective stance is clear. “To subject [them] to whatever the rigors might be of being a child actor...we’ve seen it go great, we’ve seen it be detrimental, and why risk that? If you’ve got it, you’ve got it, you can wait a few years."

Rio: The "Mini Goldie"

The Hudson-Hawn family isn’t short of talent, with Rio being fondly called "mini Goldie" for her budding dance prowess. Kurt Russell, Hawn’s partner of over four decades, chimed in on the family dynamic, telling E! News about Rio’s "serious chops with dancing ability," and how she’s earned her charming nickname. "There’s something about her. A lot of people call her ‘Mini Goldie,’” Russell gushed.

In a family where acting isn’t just a job but a natural inclination, Russell noted, “It’s an interesting family in that regard. Nobody really intentionally looks at acting as something that must be, ‘We must follow this tradition.’ There’s nobody doing that. Whether it strikes you or not, it strikes a lot of us.”

Goldie Hawn's Maternal Wisdom

Goldie Hawn herself has also spoken of her granddaughter's potential, emphasizing the importance of choices and happiness. "I don’t think we have a choice frankly. Same with Kate. I didn’t have a choice, and I think this one, we don’t have a choice," she told Access Hollywood last year of her granddaughter Rio’s apparent destiny to shine. "All I want her to be is happy. I don’t care about anything else."

In a heartfelt nod to family, Hawn shared her pride in their close-knit clan during a 2022 interview with Australian Women’s Weekly. "I look at our kids and grandchildren and there’s nothing in the world that could make me as proud as I am of all of them. Being a grandmother is amazing, I love it. It brings incredible joy. Family is so important.”

As the acting bug runs deep, Hudson remains committed to keeping his children out of the spotlight for as long as possible, taking cues from the Hawn-Russell wisdom, and letting destiny take its course.
