Netflix has just upped its game, grabbing the coveted rights to produce a feature film based on the beloved children's show, Sesame Street. The streaming giant emerged victorious after a fierce competition, outbidding several major players to secure the deal.

A Winning Partnership with Rideback

The production of this exciting new project will be in collaboration with Rideback, the powerhouse behind hits like the live-action versions of "Lilo & Stitch" and "Aladdin." With executives Jonathan Eirich and Michael Lofaso at the helm, Rideback was already in motion with Sesame Workshop on another animation venture, giving them an advantageous position in clinching this deal. Sesame Workshop, the creative force behind the legendary show, will also play a role as producers.

The Year-Long Battle for Big Bird

The journey to secure these rights has been a dramatic saga. Initially, a three-way contest saw Universal and Warner Bros. vying alongside Netflix. Warner Bros., despite holding the rights for nearly a decade, bowed out due to corporate acquisition upheavals, first from Netflix, then Paramount.

Universal came close, boasting a collaboration with the talented Daniels of "Everything Everywhere All at Once" fame, and the creative duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller. However, their vision ultimately couldn't topple Netflix’s winning bid. The approval of Rideback's approach by Sesame Workshop was a crucial factor in Netflix coming out on top.
