The drug rehabilitation community is in a state of shock after reports surfaced of a methamphetamine scandal at a Kedah rehab center. Allegations have emerged that staff members were supplying meth to 47 inmates, raising serious concerns about the integrity and security of government-run facilities. Experts Demand Independent Audits
Criminologist P Sundramoorthy from Universiti Sains Malaysia is advocating for independent bodies to conduct regular audits and inspections at these centers. "Responsibility for security, treatment, and administrative oversight is often spread across various departments," he notes. This decentralization can create loopholes that allow staff misconduct to go unnoticed, making it essential to introduce external oversight to ensure accountability.
Systemic Failures Exposed
Last week's findings by the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission pointed to staff liability for the scandal. After 47 inmates tested positive for methamphetamine, the commission recommended filing a police report. Senior lecturer Shankar Durairaja highlighted the gravity of the situation, indicating a systemic failure in security and governance. "The established supply of drugs within the facility suggests coordination, repeated opportunity, and sustained access," Shankar stated.
Strengthening Security and Culture
Shankar is pushing for tighter controls, improved detection technologies, and a cultural shift within these institutions. He suggests deploying trained inspection teams and advanced tools like drug scanners and CCTV analytics to prevent illicit material from entering facilities. "Even if some personnel were unaware, negligent, or willfully blind, this incident reflects a significant governance deficit," he remarked, emphasizing the need for a strong reporting culture and enforced standard operating procedures.
