Medals Under Fire in Milano Cortina

They’re the ultimate symbol of victory, yet the Winter Olympic medals in Milano Cortina are becoming a source of embarrassment for officials. Reports are flooding in from athletes who are finding their hard-earned medals falling apart, leading organizers to announce a full-scale investigation into the issue.

This Monday, the Olympic committee vowed to get to the bottom of why these medals are not holding up. Among the affected athletes is American downhill skiing champion Breezy Johnson, who watched in horror as her medal broke right after the podium ceremony. "I was jumping up and down in excitement, then it just fell off," she shared with reporters, displaying the damaged award.

Athletes Sound the Alarm

The problem is not isolated to one athlete. Swedish cross-country skier Ebba Andersson experienced a similar mishap when her medal "fell in the snow and broke in two." She expressed her hopes that the organizers have a "plan B" for these incidents. Meanwhile, German biathlete Justus Strelow and US figure skater Alysa Liu are among other athletes facing similar woes.

Organizers Scramble for Solutions

During a press conference, Andrea Francisi, chief games operations officer for Milano Cortina, confirmed their awareness of the situation. "We are fully aware of the situation and you have seen the pictures. We are looking into what exactly the problem is," he assured.

“We will pay maximum attention to the medals. So that everything will be perfect because this is one of the most important things for the athletes.”

Officials speculate that the issue might be linked to the medal’s cord, which includes a breakaway mechanism intended to prevent choking hazards. This mechanism might be contributing to the structural failures under celebratory stresses. Notably, similar issues affected the Paris 2024 Olympic medals, with numerous requests for replacements.

As the investigation unfolds, athletes and fans alike await a resolution to ensure that the symbols of Olympic glory remain intact.
