Matthew Lillard, the charismatic actor known for his iconic roles in the "Scooby-Doo" movies, has candidly shared his thoughts on why he's making waves in Hollywood once again. In a recent chat on the “Phase Hero” podcast, Lillard opened up about the power of nostalgia, suggesting it might just be the secret sauce to his current career revival.
“‘Scooby-Doo’ one and two are more popular now than they ever were when they came out. So I do think there’s a weird nostalgia thing happening in our industry and in the zeitgeist because I think that people are longing for ye olde times,” Lillard said with a thoughtful chuckle.
With his tongue-in-cheek reflection, Lillard humorously remarked that his newfound surge in projects might not be due to personal admiration, but rather the industry's yearning for the good old days.
Lillard's career took an unexpected turn after "Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed," a film which he hoped would catapult him into Hollywood's elite. Speaking to Business Insider in 2024, he recounted how the box office disappointment forced him to recalibrate his approach to fame and acting.
“I was caught up in the success of what I was doing, I was caught up in the parts I was getting, I was caught up in this drive to be quote-unquote famous,” he admitted, reflecting on the ups and downs he’s weathered throughout his career.
Fast forward to 2023, and Lillard is back in the spotlight, gaining momentum with his role as William Afton in “Five Nights at Freddy’s.” His resurgence doesn't stop there; he's landed roles in "The Life of Chuck,” “Five Nights and Freddy’s 2,” and “Scream 7." Moreover, he's set to appear in Mike Flanagan’s “Carrie” TV series and will share the screen with stars like Pedro Pascal and Olivia Wilde in Tony Gilroy’s “Behemoth!”
As Lillard takes on these new ventures, it's clear that the industry's love for a nostalgia-driven revival, combined with his undeniable talent, is giving his career a fresh chapter. Whether it’s the fondness for times gone by or a true appreciation for his craft, Lillard’s comeback story is one for the Hollywood books.
