Matthew Fox's Hollywood Hiatus

Matthew Fox, best known for his captivating portrayal of Jack Shepard on the iconic series Lost, finally opens up about why he decided to step back from the Hollywood scene. In a candid chat with Variety, the 59-year-old actor revealed the real reason behind his break from acting following the global success of Lost.

"I felt like it was time to engage really intensely with my family," Fox shared, shedding light on his decision. "I had missed some of their childhood because I was on set all the time with Lost and doing films and promoting everything." Before his rise to fame with the 2004 premiere of Lost, Fox had already started his own family with wife Margherita Ronchi. The couple shares two sons, Kyle, now 28, and Byron, now 25.

Life Beyond the Island

After Lost wrapped up in 2010, Fox didn't vanish completely. He starred in films like Alex Cross, Emperor, and Bone Tomahawk. But by 2014, he hit pause to focus on family. "It was the right moment for me to step back and take a moment and engage with the people that I love and care about the most in the world," he explained.

Yet, the acting bug bit him again. "I kind of missed storytelling," Fox admitted, reflecting on his return to Hollywood. This passion reignited when Taylor Sheridan offered him a role in The Madison, a spinoff of the renowned show Yellowstone. Fox was immediately sold on the idea. "I was like, 'Yeah, I'm in,'" he enthusiastically recalled, adding that he's now found a way to "balance" his work and personal life.

New Ventures

Fox has never shied away from a comeback when the right project calls. His return in 2021 with the thriller series Last Light marked another exciting chapter. "I kind of had a bucket list in my mind of things that I wanted to accomplish in the business," he shared at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Television Festival. "And after I did Bone Tomahawk in 2014, that had kind of completed the bucket list." However, Fox continued to explore other creative ventures, dabbling in music and writing during his hiatus.

With a renewed passion for acting and an interest in executive producing, Fox is keen on blending his love for storytelling with new opportunities. "The opportunity to be involved in Last Light came along, and so I wanted to give it a shot. And it felt like the right time," Fox added, signaling that Hollywood hasn't seen the last of him yet.
