Mark Fischbach, the YouTube legend better known as Markiplier, is flipping the Hollywood script with his indie horror hit, Iron Lung. Not only did he direct and star in this film adaptation of the popular horror game, but the movie has grossed a staggering $50 million on just a $4 million budget. Talk about a killer return! Competing with studio giants, Iron Lung proved that a grassroots campaign can still pack a punch.
“At least a lot of Hollywood was willfully ignoring the potential of YouTubers here," Fischbach told the Lemonade Stand podcast.
Fischbach has been in the YouTube game since 2012, charming fans with his playthroughs of spine-tingling games like Five Nights at Freddy’s. Despite the odds, he pushed forward in 2023 with plans to take on a massive role in bringing Iron Lung to the screen. The movie, which dives into the eerie depths of a blood-filled ocean, defied skeptics who said it was a fool's errand to juggle writing, directing, and acting.
“They said it shouldn’t be done. Not that it couldn’t be done,” Fischbach told Variety.
Fischbach stands alongside other YouTubers challenging Hollywood's elite. The film industry is slowly waking up to this potential – NEON’s 2025 release of Shelby Oaks by YouTuber Chris Stuckmann, and A24's upcoming The Backrooms by Kane Parsons, are clear signs. Fischbach, however, isn’t just seeking fame or fortune; it’s the prestige that eludes many online creators.
In private, Fischbach admits he'd hesitate to adapt another video game, wary of being typecast like Paul W.S. Anderson. Yet, with Iron Lung’s success, studio executives are knocking at his door, eager to uncover his secret formula. "They’re all asking me the same thing," he says. "’How’d you do it? How’d you do it?’”
Markiplier's story isn't just about the money – it's a tale of talent, tenacity, and breaking barriers in an industry ripe for disruption.
