LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'American Idol' judge Lionel Richie is advising today's stars to connect with their fans, or risk facing a harsh backlash. His warning comes after singer Chappell Roan faced criticism over a controversial fan encounter involving professional soccer player Jorginho's family. Richie’s words underscore a crucial part of the celebrity experience – fan engagement.
During a candid chat with his son-in-law Joel Madden, Richie opened up about the impact of fame and the responsibility that comes with it. “I was invisible once,” he shared, reflecting on the importance of acknowledging fans. He emphasized, “They want to say something to you. And you can see it on their face. They want to say something. And for me to ignore them would be the worst.”
“Sometimes you meet the person you idolize the most, and you're sorry you met them,” Richie explained, adding that he made a personal vow, “I made a promise to myself – I'm never going to be that. Never.”
He highlighted a common oversight for newcomers to the industry: the importance of liking people. “The thing that happens a lot of times is, I tell people when they get into the business, there's one thing you didn't calculate. I hope you like people,” Richie noted. He warned that fame can feel isolating if one doesn’t enjoy interactions.
The drama unfolded during Roan’s performance at Lollapalooza Brazil. The artist allegedly asked security to confront Jorginho’s 11-year-old stepdaughter, Ada, after a brief encounter at a hotel breakfast. Jorginho recounted what he called a “very upsetting situation,” as Ada had been thrilled to see her idol and had even crafted a sign for Roan.
According to Jorginho, Ada’s interaction was simple and innocent – she merely passed by Roan, checked if it was really her, smiled, and returned to her table. Despite not saying a word or making any demands, a security guard approached the family table aggressively, leaving Ada "extremely shaken" and in tears.
Roan, however, later denied the incident through Instagram Stories. Yet, the fallout continued as Rio de Janeiro’s Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere declared Roan unwelcome in the city for future performances, emphasizing the serious repercussions of the incident. It’s a stark reminder of how a single fan encounter can ripple through the celebrity world.
