In a major career move, Nollywood’s own Joke Silva has landed a role in the much-anticipated American drama Clarissa. Directed by the innovative Nigerian-British duo Arie and Chuko Esiri, this project is already setting the film world abuzz. Known for their groundbreaking debut Eyimofe (This Is My Desire), the Esiri brothers are diving back into the cinematic spotlight with this contemporary twist on Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway.
Set against the vibrant backdrops of Lagos and Delta State, Clarissa reimagines Woolf’s 1925 masterpiece. It delves into themes of memory, identity, and societal expectations, all through the lens of a high-society hostess grappling with her past. With its international cast and rich Nigerian landscapes, the film promises a cross-continental storytelling experience that’s not to be missed.
“It’s an honor to be part of a project that merges such diverse talents and cultures,” says Silva, “Clarissa is a beautiful blend of tradition and innovation.”
Silva isn’t going it alone – she joins a powerhouse lineup featuring internationally-renowned actors like Oscar-nominated Sophie Okonedo and Golden Globe-nominated David Oyelowo. The film also stars Nikki Amuka-Bird and Danny Sapani, adding further star power. Rising talents like Ayo Edebiri and India Amarteifio contribute global appeal, ensuring Clarissa will capture audiences worldwide.
Supported by African funding from Afreximbank’s Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) programme and Lagos-based MBO Capital, Clarissa is set to make waves internationally. With US distribution handled by Neon – the company behind hits like Parasite – this film’s theatrical release is hotly anticipated. Expect international sales to skyrocket as Clarissa hits screens, bringing its unique cultural fusion to the global stage.
