Jessica Gunning, the talented star from Baby Reindeer, has candidly opened up about her personal life, revealing why she's never been in a romantic relationship. In a recent profile with The Times of London, Gunning, 40, disclosed her long-time single status and how it played a key role in her journey to self-discovery. "I’ve never been in a relationship before with anyone," she shared, adding that her surroundings initially kept her from realizing her true identity. "Everyone around me was gay. I just didn’t think I could be."

“I never knew how to flirt, I didn’t get it. I was always friends with guys and would set them up with other friends," Gunning explained. "In a way it was, like, ‘Great, because I’m not interested.’”

Embracing Her True Self

Gunning, who came out as gay in 2022, explained that her questions about her sexuality were the main reason she avoided romantic entanglements. She reflected on how societal expectations and her own uncertainties led her to focus on friendships rather than romantic pursuits. "Well, not to get too deep, but it was probably that I didn’t want to go out with guys and so I was finding a way to avoid it," she confessed.

Adding another layer to her story, Gunning noted that her weight may have contributed to her feelings of "otherness." "It might be connected to size, maybe because I was bigger," she noted, careful to emphasize that her experiences weren't negative. "It was, like, an otherness."

Finding Fulfillment Beyond Romance

Without romance, Gunning poured her energy into her acting career, finding fulfillment in her work. "My job was my passion and my love," she said. "The characters I got to play, I felt like I maybe lived vicariously through a lot of them. I felt very sexual and connected to myself, so I was happy in so many ways."

Her dedication paid off when she landed a major role in the 2024 adaptation of Baby Reindeer, based on Richard Gadd's one-man show. Reflecting on her time with the production, Gunning expressed her deep connection to the project and her co-workers. "I felt very protective of Richard," she revealed. "I love filming, I love getting to know the crew. We get so close, I always grieve it when it’s over."
