James Franco is breaking his silence on why he seemingly stepped away from Hollywood's glitz and glam. At the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, Franco set the record straight – he insists he was never "hiding out." The actor, who attended the event with his longtime partner Izabel Pakzad, was there to promote his upcoming projects.
Franco, now 48, dismissed reports of his public disappearing act following allegations against him. “It’s not true I’ve been hiding out,” he told Deadline during an official festival dinner on May 12. For years, he continued to visit Cannes, keeping ties with the industry alive by selling projects, watching films, and maintaining his network.
“I believe I was put on this planet to make movies,” the actor explained, sharing his renewed focus on filmmaking and personal growth.
The candid comments come almost eight years after Franco faced serious accusations of sexual misconduct from multiple women, including former acting students, back in 2018. In 2021, he reached a $2.235 million settlement in a lawsuit involving two of those students. While Franco has acknowledged past mistakes, he now emphasizes living a positive life and being the best person he can be.
Franco's appearance at Cannes was marked by optimism. He attended the premiere of "The Electric Kiss" alongside Pakzad, and his action thriller "Foster" was screened at the festival as well. Franco also revealed he wrapped up filming on a major studio project slated for release in late 2026 or 2027.
After the allegations, Franco's Hollywood presence dwindled, as he took a break from major productions between 2019 and 2024. His return to the screen has mainly focused on smaller, international indie films like "Hey Joe," "Squali," "Bunny Man," and "The Price of Money: A Largo Winch Adventure."
In a 2024 interview with Variety, Franco spoke about grappling with personal challenges, saying the backlash forced him to confront ignored aspects of his life. He described this period as "painful but necessary," highlighting his journey towards emotional growth and stability.
Franco credits his relationship with Pakzad for helping shift his perspective. Previously, he struggled with commitment but now finds solace in their stability, away from Hollywood's relentless pressure. His Cannes comeback has sparked mixed reactions online, with some embracing his return while others remain skeptical.
