Hollywood heartthrob Jacob Elordi is dishing out details about a sizzling accident that left him with a second-degree burn. While filming the much-anticipated film 'Wuthering Heights,' the actor, who stars opposite Margot Robbie, found himself in a hot mess quite literally. As he recounted to Esquire, Elordi was busy scrubbing off layers of dirt and makeup from his role when things took a fiery turn.
“As Heathcliff, I was covered in mange and dirt, and I thought, 'I’m not going to do that again, I’m going to clean my feet properly every night and come in to work fresh the next day.' So I went to clean my feet, and I leaned back and my back seared into the steam knob and I stood up screaming; it tore up my back," he told director Emerald Fennell.
The drama didn't end there. Director Emerald Fennell was initially alarmed when she received a cryptic text from producer Josey McNamara stating "Jacob’s in hospital." Fennell's concerns quickly pivoted from fearing a car accident to discovering the mishap was a steamy shower-related incident. "I was like, 'You know what, Josey? Start with that,'" she quipped.
Adding a layer of irony, Elordi's makeup artist Siân Miller had playfully challenged the 'Euphoria' star to bring his character Heathcliff to life in a dramatic way. "She challenged me: 'If Daniel Day-Lewis was playing Heathcliff, he would have come in with scars.' I said, 'Well, I’m going to go away and maim myself on the weekend to prove to you that I’m Heathcliff!'" Elordi humorously remarked.
As the steam clears from Elordi's mishap, the film, directed by Fennell, is already stirring conversations beyond its plot. The casting choice sparked some backlash due to the character Heathcliff's "dark-skinned" description in Emily Brontë's novel. While previous adaptations have largely cast white actors, the 2011 version broke this trend with James Howson, a Black actor, in the role.
The adaptation of the classic tale intertwines a passionate and obsessive love story between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, promising to captivate audiences despite the controversies. For Jacob Elordi, the journey of embodying Heathcliff has been as intense and fiery as the role itself.
