Issa Rae Takes a Stand

Issa Rae is turning up the heat on Hollywood’s lukewarm embrace of diversity, equity, and inclusion (D.E.I.) initiatives. In a candid conversation with The Wrap, Rae, the celebrated actress and producer, called out the industry's backslide in representation both behind and in front of the camera. Reflecting on her own beginnings, Rae revealed how she had to create her web series, The Misadventures of an Awkward Black Girl, back in 2011 to fill the glaring gap in representation. "I started Awkward Black Girl because there was a dearth of representation in the industry, and it felt like this was my opportunity to put an archetype into the space that didn’t exist at the time," Rae shared.

“And now, even after so much progress, we’re kind of back to limited representation and having to stake claim of our stories. We’re back where we started, in a way, but wiser.”

Challenges in the Industry

Rae's insights come at a time when even executives of color face constraints, fearing job loss if they push for diverse voices. "I’m seeing it. Just blatantly. People aren’t investing like they were before," she pointed out. "[DEI] has changed meanings and has become a bad word." Yet, Rae remains resolute in her mission through her production company, Hoorae, which is dedicated to telling inclusive stories. She notes the strategic shifts required to get shows greenlit, advising that, "You have to be smarter about how you package and market [projects]."

A Call for Direct Engagement

In Rae’s view, Hollywood is grappling with an "identity crisis," increasingly relying on creators and social media to rejuvenate its approach. "I feel like Hollywood is in an identity crisis right now," Rae observed. "I don’t think that that’s the right model." She highlights the industry's aversion to discovering emerging talent and the necessity for creators to stay laser-focused on building direct bonds with their audience. "Hollywood has gotten a bit lazier in their discovery," Rae lamented, stressing the importance of self-driven engagement and proof of concept in catching the eye of decision-makers.
