Johnny Depp and his rock supergroup, Hollywood Vampires, are in the hot seat as they face a federal lawsuit over a canceled concert scheduled for July 2023 in Slovakia. The show, set to rock the Olympic Fields, never saw the light of day, leaving both fans and the promoter in dismay.
According to court documents reviewed by TMZ, the band was paid a staggering $277,000 in advance by the promoter, who now alleges he's been left high and dry without a refund. The legal complaint, filed in Texas, accuses the group – also featuring rock legends Alice Cooper and Joe Perry – of failing to honor their commitment.
Rumors have swirled around the reasons for the sudden cancellation. While Hollywood Vampires initially blamed venue issues for pulling the plug, the promoter disputes this claim. He suggests that the real reason was due to "personal reasons unrelated to the venue," citing reports of Depp's hospitalization at the time for an undisclosed medical issue.
The promoter claims the canceled event not only led to financial losses but also tarnished his reputation in the industry. "Upon arrival today to the venue in Slovakia to begin set up for tonight’s performance, it quickly became clear that the construction of the facility was incomplete, and therefore unsafe for both the band and the general public," the band stated on July 20, 2023. Despite these assertions, the legal battle over who bears the responsibility is just heating up.
