Heather Graham's Take on Intimacy Coordinators

Heather Graham isn't holding back about her mixed feelings on the new-age approach to Hollywood's steamy scenes. The actress, known for her iconic roles in films like "Boogie Nights" and "The Hangover," shared her candid thoughts on working with intimacy coordinators post-#MeToo, a change she describes as "awkward."

Graham opened up in an interview with Us Weekly, revealing, "I think the MeToo movement was amazing [and] I think there is a very good intention behind intimacy coordinators. But it is odd when you come up without having them, and suddenly there’s this random person in the room just staring at you when you’re, like, pretending you have sex." Clearly, the transition from the old ways to the current practices in the industry has left a few actors scratching their heads.

“I know that they have a beautiful intention, and they really want to help and protect actors,” Graham continued. “But as the actor, sometimes I’m like, ‘Can you just get all these people out of the room?’”

Hollywood's 'Confusing' New Reality

Grinding gears with the norm, Graham recalls a particular incident that took place on set, where she felt an intimacy coordinator overstepped their boundaries. "One time, I had an intimacy coordinator, and they started directing me on, like, how to have sex in a scene," she shared. The situation escalated to the point where Graham felt compelled to assert, "You’re not the director, OK? I’m not asking for notes on how to have sex in the scene."

The actress further expressed her frustration, "I just felt, like, ‘Shut up.’ I’m like, ‘You can just tell this to the director… because I don’t want to have two different people directing me.’ It’s confusing." The clash of roles during the filming process has certainly sparked debate among actors in the industry.

Balancing Act of Experience and New Norms

The actress also recounted an experience while filming a horror movie, highlighting the awkwardness of having to protect a young intimacy coordinator. "I just did this other horror movie, and there was this adorable intimacy coordinator," she noted. "She was in her 20s, super sweet. We were doing this scary scene, and I felt like I had to take care of her."

Reflecting on her extensive career, Graham mentions feeling confident enough to navigate these scenes without additional assistance. "It might be better if you’re younger and don’t know how to stand for yourself and speak up for yourself," said the 56-year-old actress. "At this point, I feel like I’m strong enough. So I just don’t want a lot of extra people in the room." With decades of acting under her belt, Graham continues to captivate audiences, both in front of and behind the camera. Her latest film, "They Will Kill You," is set to release on March 27.
