KUALA LUMPUR, April 5 – Joy Ngiaw, a name now etched in Emmy history, has made Malaysia proud with her remarkable win. This Emmy Award victory is a dream come true for many, but for Joy Ngiaw, it's the reward for years of dedication, passion, and unyielding love for storytelling through music.
Ngiaw carved a niche for herself as the first Malaysian to clinch a 2026 Children’s and Family Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Direction and Composition for her work on the animated series WondLa. Her impressive composition for the second-season finale, Chapter 14: Heart, was celebrated with much fanfare in New York City, making waves globally and bringing her incredible journey into the limelight.
Hailing from Pahang, Ngiaw's musical journey began early. Although she moved to Shanghai at six, her connection to her homeland remained strong, with frequent visits back to Malaysia. Her childhood revolved around the harmonious blend of school, family, and music, where the piano became her voice.
“Growing up, life was centred around school, family, and music. Piano became a big part of how I expressed myself,” she shared with Malay Mail.
Mandopop icons like Fish Leong heavily influenced her, alongside a mix of local and global sounds that enriched her musical landscape. Composing for film and TV was always her dream, and exposure to diverse cultures amplified her skills as a composer.
At just 16, Ngiaw set her sights on Los Angeles, a city synonymous with creativity and opportunity. The challenges of Hollywood were intense, often walking into rooms as the only woman or person of color, but she persevered, leaving her mark with scores for projects like I Want You to Be Happy and Lunch with Gia (Solo Mio).
Animation held a special place in her heart – classics like Toy Story and Studio Ghibli's masterpieces inspired her to understand the emotional depth music can add to storytelling.
Joy Ngiaw's Emmy win is a chapter, not the conclusion, in her career. She dreams of collaborating with Malaysian talent like Adele Lim and is currently immersed in an animated feature while continuing to craft music for film and TV.
Despite her Los Angeles success, Ngiaw's heart remains loyal to Malaysia, echoing her roots in every note. "Malaysia is and will always be my home," she declares, a sentiment celebrated by the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) in light of her Emmy success.
