The heat is on in Nigeria as a sensational bribery scandal has erupted within the country's security agencies. The controversy centers around a failed attempt to arrest former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, at Abuja's Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on February 12.
The Department of State Services (DSS) revealed that five officers are under the spotlight, accused of pocketing bribes during this botched operation. The accused include Ayuba Yakubu, a police officer; Murtala Inuwa from the DSS; Najeeb Murtala of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS); and two Aviation Security (AVSEC) officials, Musa Adamu and Salihu Victor. These officers are said to have confessed to accepting bribes which allowed unauthorized access to restricted zones and impeded official security procedures.
“The officers confessed to receiving bribes to facilitate unauthorized entry into restricted areas and to obstruct lawful security operations.”
The joint investigation, carried out by the DSS, NIS, Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), and the Federal Ministry of Aviation, led to the detention of the implicated officers. They have been handed over to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to face prosecution. Additionally, other personnel from the NIS and NCS who misused their uniforms, even if they didn’t accept bribes, are slated for internal disciplinary measures.
This situation first unfolded on February 12 when DSS agents attempted to detain El-Rufai as he returned from Egypt. However, the arrest bid was thwarted, reportedly due to interference by the bribed officers. El-Rufai's spokesperson, Muyiwa Adekeye, disclosed that his passport was confiscated after he refused to comply with the DSS without a formal invitation. The former governor later complied with a request from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and was subsequently taken into custody by the ICPC, where he remains as investigations continue to unravel.
