Ready to Romance – Eiza's Next Big Move

Eiza Gonzalez, who has lit up the screen in hits like Baby Driver and Alita: Battle Angel, is yearning for a new challenge. Despite her thriving Hollywood career, the Mexican actress has yet to dive into the world of romantic comedies. In a candid chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Eiza revealed, “I’ve never done a rom-com, and I’m a hopeless romantic and have always wanted to.”

She added a playful note on her career so far: “My girlfriends are always pointing out that I’m in these movies with these actors like Jake [Gyllenhaal] or Henry [Cavill], and I never get to kiss them.” Fans are buzzing about who might be her co-star if she gets her romcom wish!

Breaking the Mold in I Love Boosters

Gonzalez takes on a unique role in the upcoming Boots Riley-directed crime comedy I Love Boosters, where she plays a cashier with a hidden talent in dialectical materialism. The actress notes how her character in this film is a departure from her usual roles, often surrounded by a cast of men. She muses, “It’s always, like, five men and then me. I’ve always wondered why I get cast in things like that.”

Eiza also discussed the career trajectory many actresses face, explaining, “The first is, ‘We don’t really know who you are’; and then they’re like, ‘This is all you are.’”

From Breakthrough to Breakout

Eiza's big break came in Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver alongside a star-studded cast including Lily James, Kevin Spacey, and Jamie Foxx. Her career uplift was thanks to casting director Francine Maisler’s advocacy. “I was competing against a lot of big names. But she fought for me and was like, ‘There’s this random girl out of nowhere from Mexico that I think you should hire.’”

Reflecting on her journey, Eiza has been open about overcoming language barriers and body image struggles emanating from her early life in Mexico City and personal loss. She confides, "I was so terrified when I broke into the industry [with 2017's Baby Driver] because I was very self-conscious about English not being my first language."

Tackling her body image issues, which she links to her father’s early death, Gonzalez has shown resilience and dedication, underscoring the preparation and discipline driving her success.
