A Farewell Screening Before the Curtain Falls

Westwood's iconic Village Theatre is gearing up for one final cinematic treat before it closes its doors for a major year-long renovation. Thanks to a unique deal between Universal and the Village Directors Circle (VDC), film enthusiasts are in for a treat as Christopher Nolan's epic, The Odyssey, takes the stage. This isn't just any screening – it's a special three-week engagement kicking off on July 17, with the film presented in stunning 70mm format, running thrice daily. The American Cinematheque, a long-time partner of the theater, will oversee this cinematic delight.

Star-Studded Event with a Purpose

This special engagement is part of a broader series of events aimed at raising funds for the upcoming closure and extensive renovation of the Village Theatre, slated to last a full 12 months. Not just a film screening, it's a celebration of cinematic culture, bolstered by the recent world premiere of the James Cameron and Billie Eilish collaboration, Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D).

“There are many reasons to go to the movies, but few better than a three-week run of The Odyssey in 70mm at one of the most beautiful movie palaces in the country," enthuses Jason Reitman, a key figure in the VDC.

A Dazzling Cast and Visionary Team

The Odyssey promises to be a cinematic masterpiece, retelling Homer’s legendary story with a stellar cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. With Nolan at the helm, alongside producer Emma Thomas, excitement is at fever pitch. The duo are not just contributing their film – they're part of the VDC's mission to rejuvenate the Village Theatre into a prime spot for premieres, retrospectives, and cinematic festivals.

Looking to the Future

As the curtain prepares to fall temporarily on this historical venue, the anticipation for its grand reopening in 2027 builds. The VDC and Cinematheque envision a future where the remodeled Village Theatre becomes the epicenter for exclusive screenings, award-season galas, and year-round cinematic festivals. Continuing its tradition of hosting movie premieres, this transformation is set to make the Village Theatre a beacon of film artistry and community gatherings.
