Oscar-nominated actor Antonio Banderas is not holding back when it comes to discussing the ethnic typecasting he battled during his early days in Hollywood. The Spanish heartthrob recently spilled the beans on how he was pigeonholed into playing "bad guys" simply because of his Hispanic heritage.
“They said, you are here, like the blacks and the Hispanics, to play the bad guys,” Banderas revealed in a candid interview.
Despite these hurdles, Banderas carved out a remarkable career, breaking through the stereotypes that initially constrained him. He played iconic roles such as Zorro in The Mask of Zorro (1998) and its sequel, as well as the endearing voice of Puss in Boots in the Shrek franchise.
Banderas' journey from typecast roles to international stardom is nothing short of inspiring. He noted how his portrayal of Zorro flipped the script on Hollywood's expectations, highlighting that his character's nemesis was a blue-eyed, blond Captain Love. More recently, his voice work as Puss in Boots charmed children worldwide, proving a Spanish accent could be heroic and lovable.
Having reprised his voice role in several Shrek sequels and spin-offs, Banderas expressed his contentment with his legacy in the franchise. "Puss in Boots did very well," he remarked, acknowledging the character's success both in terms of awards and box office performance.
As anticipation builds for Shrek 5, set to hit screens in 2027, fans may be disappointed to hear Banderas is not yet involved. "I'm not so far, and I'm not being called for that," he shared, while remaining open to future possibilities. Despite the uncertainty, Banderas is proud of his work and remains optimistic about the future of his beloved character.
Antonio Banderas' story is a testament to breaking barriers and redefining what it means to be a hero in Hollywood. His journey from villainous roles to beloved characters serves as an inspiration for future generations.
