Taylor Swift's iconic 'Reputation' concert film continues to make waves across the entertainment industry, this time serving as a creative blueprint for director David Lowery's latest project, 'Mother Mary'. Lowery has openly credited Swift's electrifying stadium tour and its accompanying concert film as a pivotal inspiration for the concert scenes in his upcoming A24 film.
“Her Reputation concert film is one of the best concert films ever. It’s truly phenomenal. And for our concert sequences we looked at that repeatedly,” Lowery told Empire in a new interview published today. “You would not believe the amount of time we were talking about Taylor.”
In 'Mother Mary', Anne Hathaway steps into the shoes of a mega pop star, described as a mash-up of Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift. The storyline follows her character's dramatic escape from a tour, leading her to reconnect with an old friend and fashion designer, played by Michaela Coel. The film features an impressive lineup, with original tracks by Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX adding to its musical allure.
Lowery's team extensively analyzed three key performances from Swift's 'Reputation' film, using them not only as a creative guide but also as a practical budgeting tool to manage their independent film setup. “We took three songs from Reputation and broke it down, shot by shot,” Lowery explained, highlighting their approach towards capturing the grandeur of stadium shows on a restricted budget.
The Swift influence went beyond the screen and even shaped personal connections. After filming wrapped, Hathaway surprised Lowery with a thoughtful gift – a beaded bracelet with the words 'Anti-Hero', a nod to Swift's 'Midnights' album. The duo even attended a Swift concert during her Eras Tour in Europe, further cementing the singer's impact on the film.
“Imagine Taylor Swift in 10 or 15 years,” Lowery mused, noting how he envisioned Hathaway's character as a future version of the superstar. With Anne Hathaway leading a star-studded cast that includes Michaela Coel, FKA twigs, Hunter Schafer, and Kaia Gerber, 'Mother Mary' is set to captivate audiences worldwide when it hits theaters for a limited release on April 17, followed by a wider release on April 24.
