Alan Cumming is not just a celebrated actor and presenter, but a man with a profound and, at times, heartbreaking past. “Looking back on it, it was a beautiful place to grow up, but at the time all I wanted was to get as far away as possible,” Cumming reflects on his tumultuous childhood.

Cumming's relationship with his father was fraught with complexity. The actor had no contact with him after his early twenties until a revelation during the filming of "Who Do You Think You Are?" His father, who passed away from cancer in 2010, harbored a false belief that Cumming was not his biological son. DNA tests eventually disproved this notion, providing a bittersweet closure to a painful chapter.

Speaking to The Guardian, Cumming pondered the roots of his father's suspicions, ultimately concluding that his father's mental illness was a factor. "It wasn’t just rage," Cumming noted, "it was someone who wasn’t dealing with a full deck. And that’s liberating to realise."

Finding Love in Unexpected Places

Off-screen, Cumming's personal life is a testament to resilience and love. His romantic history includes a marriage to actress Hilary Lyon and relationships with Saffron Burrows and Nick Philippou. However, it was his meeting with illustrator Grant Shaffer that brought newfound happiness. The couple, who became civil partners in 2007, legally married in New York in 2012 and live together in Manhattan.

Cumming treasures his relationship with Shaffer, describing him as "lovely, kind, and hilarious." Their bond is rooted in mutual respect and acceptance, qualities that Cumming values deeply. "We respect each other, and we were a bit older when we met, so you know yourself more and are more respectful," Cumming shared.
