AI Brings Back Val Kilmer – A Hollywood Game Changer?

LOS ANGELES, March 19 – Val Kilmer, the legendary American film star who passed away due to pneumonia last year, might soon grace the big screen again. Director Coerte Voorhees has announced an innovative use of AI tools to recreate Kilmer's likeness for his upcoming film, "As Deep as the Grave," which centers around the trailblazer archaeologist Ann Morris and her co-discovery of the Anasazi civilization. Kilmer was set to portray a Catholic priest named Fintan, a role Voorhees felt deeply resonated with Kilmer's Native American heritage and his profound love for the Southwest.

“He was the actor I wanted to play this role,” Voorhees shared with Variety. “It drew on his Native American heritage and his ties to and love of the Southwest.”

Kilmer, known for his diverse roles in both blockbuster hits and indie gems, was unable to commence filming due to his declining health. However, his family's support has been instrumental in this digital resurrection, as they provided extensive video footage from Kilmer's private archives to build the AI version of the actor.

Hollywood's Cautious Embrace of AI

The project, while groundbreaking, has stirred mixed emotions across Hollywood. With AI already used to bring Kilmer back as the iconic pilot Iceman in the 2022 sequel of the classic "Top Gun," fears linger among actors, writers, and other industry pros about AI's potential to replace human jobs. The Oscars even paid tribute to Kilmer during the In Memoriam segment on Sunday, recognizing his lasting legacy in cinema.

As the industry watches closely, this digital venture might pave the way for a new era in film – one where beloved actors can transcend the constraints of time and illness, but also one where the essence of human creativity in storytelling is tested.
